As of recent, HQ Custom Design had the pleasure of working with a private client who sought to create a custom Mercedes-Benz Sprinter conversion van to be used for weekend retreats and cross country journeys with family members. Our client stressed the importance of including ample storage space for luggage and personal belongings, in addition to the inclusion of entertainment amenities to ensure passengers of all ages are well occupied throughout their commute. Since about half of the planned passengers were children, it was vital for the cabin to contain durable seating accommodations and separate entertainment configuration dedicated for adult and child use. Another essential was for the floor plan to feature an open concept design, in which there would be no separation or obstructions between the driver and passenger cabins for accessible ease when going between the two areas. Our client had approached us for this conversion project, as HQ has a vast portfolio of different Family orientated builds on the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter chassis and would be capable of offering the most amount build options and flexible build approach compared to other upfitters.

Built with Adults & Children In Mind

In terms of seating, this particular features a unique set up as there are 4 captain chairs, of which 2 include swivel functions, which were aimed for exclusive usage by adult passengers. On the other hand, the rear of the passenger cabin includes 7 coach chairs dedicated for usage by younger children. Each seat section includes manual window shades, cup holders and USB / AC outlets for space to store beverages and charge mobile or laptop devices respectively. In order to enable for additional storage space, overhead luggage racks are included within the passenger cabin , which serves the added function of featuring LED reading lights and air conditioning ducts above each seat section, similar to commercial coach buses. Furthermore, the luggage racks include 2 LED strips with one above and the other below that serve as a sources of interior lighting, in addition to inclusion of rear speakers that are components of the cabin surround sound system.

Options to Keep Passengers Well Entertainment

In regards to electronics and entertainment, the passenger cabin features a WiFi Internet router to allow patrons to remain connected throughout their commutes, in addition to enabling online services for other devices. For adult passengers, an overhead bulkhead cabinet houses the main 32” TV display and 2 front speakers that are synced with the cabin’s surround sound system. An Apple TV unit is included to serve as a media streaming device and for its AirPlay function that enables the view of Apple devices to mirrored onto the TV display.

Whereas, younger riders or children have a different set of entertainment amenities on board to keep themselves well occupied throughout their commute. The rear section of the passenger cabin features a 17” foldable TV display that is connected to not just one, but 2 video game consoles. A Microsoft Xbox One console with 2 controllers is included to allow passengers to play together with one another when in commute, in addition to a Nintendo Switch console that is playable off of its tablet or a TV display. In order for video game or external sounds not to interfere with the front 32” TV display, 7 pairs of wireless Bluetooth are included that are synced to the rear 17” TV display. As mentioned with cabin WiFi functions, the Xbox One is able to connect to Xbox Live services to enable online multiplayer for certain game titles and for streaming services such as Netflix and Hulu among others.

Retrospective On the Build

As a whole, our client received a customized family Mercedes-Benz Sprinter conversion van that was built exclusive for their travel and entertainment needs in mind. This particular build was unique due to the choice including both captain and coach seating to fit a total of 11 passengers, as certain chairs were tailored to be used by specific sets of passengers. While seen more so in shuttle buses, this build features overhead luggage racks with LED reading lights and AC ducts that work well from a function perspective and aesthetic when complimented with the OEM headliner and ceiling. 2 video game consoles can be viewed as excessive for some, or ensuring that all bases are covered for others, as the portability of the Nintendo Switch compared to the Xbox One give it some interesting applications in and out of the cabin. While it is not dedicated for prolonged travel journeys, this build focuses on providing its passengers the most ample amount of comfort and plethora of entertainment options to ensure there is never a dull or boring moment.
